Why You Should Be Following Me On Twitter

I'm not planning on doing this on a regular basis (unless there's something I need to talk about that requires more than 140 characters (which is hard as hell for me because I have a tendency to ramble)). I'm still trying to transition from Stuff Only I Care About to Twitter. So here is some stuff you've missed if you're not following me on Twitter:

30 Days

The new season of Morgan Spurlock's 30 Days premiered Tuesday night. It's a show that takes an ordinary person (or sometimes Morgan Spurlock) and reinvents them as someone else (prisoner, binge drinker, coal miner, etc.) for thirty days. Can't wait for the Meth Head episode!

Monster Quest

A new episode of Monster Quest premieres tonight. It's about a vampire beast that has been attacking animals in a tiny NC town. As an amateur NC Monster Hunter, I can't believe I haven't heard of this beast until now.

Weezer

The new Weezer album kicks major ass and is easily their best work since Pinkerton. I recommend downloading the deluxe version as the extra tracks are just as good as the album's regular tracks.

Speaking of Pinkerton, you can download the album from Amazon for $1.99. That's almost like stealing the damn thing!

Rocking The Remote

I've got a post over at Smart Television Alliance today. It's about my kids' favorite music-related television shows.

NC Dad Summit

I'll be attending the NC Dad Summit on Saturday. Beer & BBQ! Unfortunately, I have been told that there will be no strippers, but I'm working on rectifying that situation.

If you're interested in attending, you can get all the details here.

***

So yeah, that's the kind of stuff I write about on Twitter (in addition to responding to other people's Twitter thingies (I have enough problems saying the word Twitter, so there's no way I'm going to say tweets (oops, too late!))). If this is up your alley, click here to follow me on Twitter.

They Just Make This Shit Up, Don't They?

So I was watching MSNBC on Tuesday night, checking out the early primary results. With 20% of the Indiana vote counted and Clinton leading 131,782 votes to 97,998, they deemed the Indiana race too early to call. Yet with 0% of the North Carolina vote counted and Clinton leading 1,323 votes to 870, they called the North Carolina race for Obama.

How in the hell can they do this? And yes, that is a rhetorical question. I know they pay people to run exit polls. But didn't the media learn something from their early speculations during the 2000 Presidential election?

I Am Naïve

In my last post, I made a joke about receiving last-second calls from the candidates. Actually, I received seven calls on the day of the election (two after 5:00 PM). Obama rang my house four times to Hillary's three. Guess that's why he won the state.

But it was nice for Chelsea to call and chat.

Another crazy, hectic week. This shit is getting old. I need 30 or 32 hours in a day.

Or to just totally stop sleeping.

And to stop complaining.

And to start writing complete sentences.

The Week in Review

CliffsNotes Edition:
  • The Yankees are now 8-7 and a game out of first.
  • Why are the Panthers playing the Giants next season? Did they draw the short straw? (But at least their NFC West opponent is Arizona).
  • Here's a reunion tour I'll probably check out.
  • Here's a reunion tour I WISH I could check out.

Weekly Random Thoughts On The Carolina Tar Heels

Ok. I've already covered my thoughts on the Heels' loss to Kansas.

But Roy Williams wearing a Kansas shirt days after Kansas bounced UNC from the tournament was totally tacky. Jerk.

Weekly Random Thoughts On The New York Yankees

The Yankees went 3-4 the past week, bringing their record to 4-4. They are currently tied for third in the AL East and are 2 1/2 games behind Baltimore. Yes, Baltimore.

If you factor out Friday night's 13-4 loss to Tampa Bay, the Yankees are giving up a respectable three runs a game. However, the Yankees are only averaging 3.125 runs per game. You're the Bronx Bombers, remember? If you don't soon find a way to start putting some runs on the board, it's going to be a long season.

The Yankees have a three-game series at Fenway this weekend. Little early this year, isn't it? Or am I misremembering?

Weekly Random Thoughts On The Carolina Tar Heels

The Heels advanced to the Final Four with a 68-47 win over Washington State and a 83-73 victory over Louisville. Tyler Hansbrough was named the regional MVP and finished the Louisville game with 28 points and 13 rebounds.

Carolina plays Kansas on Saturday. I really don't think they'll have much trouble with Kansas. Memphis is the team that scares me. I originally picked UNC over UCLA in the championship game, but Memphis played lights-out last weekend in easy wins over Michigan State and Texas.

If the Heels beat Kansas, I'm seriously considering watching the championship game in the Dean Dome with the college kids. But then again, I'm old and wouldn't be home until 1:00 AM, rendering me useless the next day.

If they win it all, do Hansbrough, Lawson, and Ellington pull a Florida and return another year to try for a repeat? Or do they head for the money? I'm betting Hansbrough will return, win or lose.

Weekly Random Thoughts On The New York Yankees

The Yankees are 1-0 and are currently tied for first with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays atop the AL East.

I am quite happy that so many of you enjoyed my April Fool's Day prank. I wasn't so sure about it. Ella told me not to post it, so I asked for a second opinion. I ran the tale by Motherbumper and she gave me the green light.

For those of you who asked, the whole thing was entirely false. While I've dated a cheerleader, she was in the same grade as I was. I've had break-ups where I've shut out the world, listened to sad songs, and stalked the girl's place, but I've never fought over a girl. I've never spent a night in jail. I've never plotted to kill anyone.

But there's always tomorrow!

Weekly Random Thoughts On The Carolina Tar Heels

The Heels made it to the Sweet Sixteen with a 113-74 thrashing of Mount St. Mary's, followed by a 108-77 shellacking of Arkansas. To say Carolina has looked impressive thus far in the NCAA tournament is an understatement. I'm a little disappointed that Roy Williams left the starters in late in the games, but I guess that's why I'm not a basketball coach.

The Heels play Washington State on Thursday night. Much has been made of Washington State's defense (they've held their opponents to 40.5 points a game so far in the tourney), but I (hope!) really don't think they'll present much of a challenge for the Heels. Carolina's first test in the tournament will come on Saturday against the Louisville/Tennessee winner (before the tournament started, I picked Tennessee to advance in this game, but now my money's on Louisville).

Hopefully, they'll survive this weekend and make it to the Final Four.

Weekly Random Thoughts On The Carolina Tar Heels

The Heels finished the season 32-2 and earned the number one spot in both polls. They followed their ACC regular season crown with an ACC Tournament title. As a result, they were "rewarded" with the top spot in the NCAA tournament.

I put rewarded in quotations because frankly, the Heels were screwed. It's bad enough they'll be facing Indiana or Arkansas in the second round and Pitt in the third round. But to possibly play either Louisville or Tennessee (who should've been a #1 seed instead of Memphis) before they even get to the Final Four is ridiculous. The East is BY FAR the toughest region.

One Last Reminder

If you're interested in entering my Parent Bloggers NCAA Bracket Challenge, you have until Thursday morning to do so. There's a mix CD and a Cynical Dad lapel pin for the winner.

Another Kind Of Tournament

Stefan at Zooglobble is running his KidVid Tournament again this year. The KidVid Tournament pits "16 of the best kids' music videos from the past year or so head-to-head with readers voting to determine the best video of the year." My favorite two songs in the bracket are going to be pitted against each other in the first round (They Might Be Giants and Happy Monsters Band), but Zed and I will be rooting for TMBG to bring home the Zooie!

The Heels topped Boston College and Florida State this week, raising their record to 28-2. They are back on top of both polls!

The Heels have a B-I-G game Saturday night at Duke (Fun Fact: the Heels are undefeated on the road this year). A win will almost certainly wrap up a number one seed for the Heels. A loss will probably earn Duke a number one seed.

I'll be watching the game in a noisy bar just so I don't have to listen to Dick Vitale.

The lineup for the Rocklahoma music festival was announced today and includes the following acts: Bret Michaels, LA Guns (the version without Phil Lewis (and therefore, the inferior version)), Enuf Z Nuff, Armored Saint, Night Ranger (Night Ranger?), Pretty Boy Floyd, Every Mother's Nightmare, Tora Tora, Black N Blue, Trixter, Kix, Warrant, Cinderella, Lynch Mob, and Tesla.

There's also some band called TBA playing. I've never heard of them, but they must be pretty damn cool because they're playing four different sets and headlining the festival two nights.

Ok. That last part was a joke. But seriously, wtf? You can't announce a festival lineup when you don't have two of your four headliners in place. You guys should've just waited a week or two until everything was finalized.

The Heels beat State and Wake this week, raising their record to 26-2. They are currently second in the ESPN/USA Today poll and third in the AP poll, with a good shot of rising to #1 next week due to Tennessee's loss on Tuesday evening.

This week, Carolina plays Boston College and Florida State, who only have nine combined ACC victories. And after that, they wrap up the regular season with a March 8th with some team from Durham.

New York Giants (+12) over New England Patriots
Do the Giants have the personnel to take down the Pats? Sure.

Will they? Probably not. But if they can keep it close, they have a good chance of winning the game.

But after a few days of intense practice (judging by Williams' Maryland postgame interview), they defeated Miami, 98-82, behind Hansbrough's thirty-five points (twenty-seven of which came in the second half).

Weekly Random Thoughts On The Carolina Tar Heels

The Heels are now 17-0 and are still ranked first in both polls. The Heels began the week with a closer-than-expected 93-81 victory over UNC-Asheville.

And then they played State.

I was really expecting a close game. State beat Carolina last year and I was truly expecting Lowe to have his guys ready to play. That was not the case.

State kept the game close for five minutes. Then Carolina went on a 34-4 run en route to a 93-62 victory.

This week, Carolina plays Georgia Tech and Maryland. They should be 19-0 when the dust settles.

The Cynical Dad NFL Playoff Picks

I went 4-0 last week, bringing my playoff record to 6-1-1. Pretty damn good, no?

Here are my picks for this weekend's playoff games (home teams in caps). As always, if you take my advice and actually spend money based on something I say, you are a fool.

San Diego (+14) over NEW ENGLAND
New England will win easily, but not my two TDs. San Diego's good enough to keep this game close.

GREEN BAY (-7) over New York Giants
The Giants' streak will come to an end this weekend. The Giants' defense will not be able to contain the Packers' passing attack. Or Ryan Grant. And Eli & Co. will not be able to trade scores. I like the Packers by at least ten.

So there you have it. I'm predicting a New England/Green Bay Super Bowl (like 99.5% of the nation). So let all the sportswriters across the nation start practicing their one-handed typing in preparation of the Favre/Brady match-up.

Weekly Random Thoughts On The Carolina Tar Heels

The Clemson game was ugly. As I told Russ earlier this week, if Clemson had just shot 60% from the charity stripe, they would've easily won the game. Instead, Carolina escaped Littlejohn with the victory. But a win's a win, you know?

This week, they play UNC-Asheville and NC State. UNC-Asheville is 11-3 and only lost to Tennessee by 13 last month. Sidney Lowe will make sure NC State plays a tough game against Carolina. Should be a fun week.

The Cynical Dad NFL Playoff Picks

Here are my picks for this weekend's playoff games (home teams in caps). As always, if you take my advice and actually spend money based on something I say, you are a fool.

GREEN BAY (-8) over Seattle
I continue to be unimpressed by Seattle. They trailed Washington late in the 4th quarter last weekend before Suisham's missed field goal and Todd Collins' implosion. I think Green Bay will win this one easily.

Jacksonville (+13) over NEW ENGLAND
I really thought Jacksonville would put up a decent fight against New England. But then I saw the 4th quarter of the Pittsburgh game. New England will win this one, but will fail to cover.

New York Giants (+7 1/2) over DALLAS
I believe the Giants will win this game. Owens may be sitting this one out, Romo has been playing like crap lately, and Eli's been playing like his big brother.

San Diego (+8 1/2) over INDIANAPOLIS
I know San Diego beat Indianapolis earlier this season, but Indy will win this weekend's game, setting the stage for New England/Indianapolis II (and hopefully fulfilling my prophecy).

Weekly Random Thoughts On The Carolina Panthers

The Panthers wrapped up their season with a meaningless victory over Tampa Bay's scrubs, 31-23 (although if I were Gruden, I'd be a bit concerned that my team gave up 180 yards on the ground to the Panthers). They ended the season 7-9, which, considering they lost their starting QB in the third game and ended up starting four QBs over the course of the season, isn't that bad.

Still, I'm left wondering what if? What if Delhomme hadn't gotten hurt? His stats through the first three games were very nice:

55-86, 624 yards, 8 TD, 1 INT, and a passer rating of 111.8 (which is quite good, even though I don't understand the passer rating (why can't they just have it go from 0-100 instead of 158.3 or whatever the hell it ends at?))

I truly believe they would've made the playoffs if he hadn't gone down.

Weekly Random Thoughts On The Carolina Tar Heels

The Heels are now 13-0 and ranked first in both polls. They have won their past six games by an average of 28.3 points and have put up 588 points in those six games. Of course, those games were against powerhouses Penn, Rutgers, Nicholls State, UC Santa Barbara, Nevada, and Valparaiso.

They finally begin ACC play this week so we'll learn how good they truly are. They kick things off on Sunday against #19 Clemson.

The lack of quality opponents hasn't stopped that talk of an undefeated season from people around here. It's not going to happen, folks. They have to play Duke, Clemson, Virginia, and NC State twice. Do you people really think they'll make it through that 8-0? And that's not even looking at the rest of the ACC schedule. Or the ACC tournament. Or the NCAA tournament.

I love Carolina, but there's no way they'll finish the season undefeated.

The Cynical Dad NFL Playoff Picks

Here are my picks for this weekend's playoff games (home teams in caps). As always, if you take my advice and actually spend money based on something I say, you are a fool.

Jacksonville (-2) over PITTSBURGH
Have you seen the way Fred Taylor's been playing the past five weeks? 589 yards and four TDs (not bad for a 43-year-old man). The whole team is hot. They've beaten four playoff teams this season (Tampa Bay, Tennessee, San Diego, and Pittsburgh).

SAN DIEGO (-9) over Tennessee
Tomlinson should run all over Tennessee if Norv Turner is smart enough to keep feeding him the ball.

Washington (+3 1/2) over SEATTLE
It's easy to go 10-6 when you get to play Arizona, St. Louis, and San Francisco twice a year. Shaun Alexander looks like he's a 43-year-old man.

New York Giants (+3) over TAMPA BAY
By far the hardest game for me to pick. But if Eli plays half as good as he did against the Patriots, the Giants will win easily.

Christ, I just picked three road teams.

Where does the series go in the third season? Will Lt. Laguerta become obsessed with clearing Doakes' name and eventually put the pieces together? Will Debra learn her brother is a serial killer? Will Rita have another new son this year? Will the writers' strike end anytime soon so they can actually start working on a third season?

Not Tired Of Me Talking About Xmas Music Yet?

dj BC did a mashup that combined AC/DC's You Shook Me All Night Long, Sarah McLachlan's Noel, and A Charlie Brown Christmas. Sound brilliant? It is.

Go here to download it (and other Christmas mashups). It's Track #2.

Podcast/Streaming Music

Since a few people wished I had included the actual music in my Rock Out With Your Christmas Stocking Out Xmas Mix Tape, I've been toying around with the notion of streaming music on my site or producing podcasts. If any of you currently do this or know someone who does, I've got a few questions:
  1. Since I'm on Blogger, I can't just upload mp3s to their server. Anyone know of any reliable free (MUST BE FREE) hosts that will allow me to put mp3s or my podcasts on their servers?
  2. What software do you use for streaming music or podcasts?
I'm leaning towards the podcast option just because I'd like to talk about the music in between songs (thus feeding my long dormant inner college dj). Plus it'll give you guys an idea of just how sexy my voice is.

That last part was a joke.

Weekly Random Thoughts On The Carolina Panthers

The Panthers were demolished by the Jaguars last weekend, 37-6. The Panthers are now 5-8, three games behind Tampa Bay in the NFC South and two games behind Minnesota for the second wild-card spot in the NFC.

Stick a fork in 'em.

They play the Seahawks this weekend. I predict a 28-17 victory for the Seahawks.

Weekly Random Thoughts On The Carolina Tar Heels

The Heels are still 8-0 and are ranked first in both the AP and ESPN/USA Today polls. It's hard to lose when you're not playing any games (although the Panthers could probably give it a shot). Their next game is against Rutgers on Sunday.

The Cynical Dad NFL Rankings

1. New England Patriots (13-0)
I doubt anyone will be guaranteeing victories against the Patriots for the rest of the season.
2. Dallas Cowboys (12-1)
It wasn't pretty, but they pulled it out in the end.
3. Indianapolis Colts (11-2)
Put a hurting on Baltimore last Sunday night.
4. Green Bay Packers (11-2)
They say you can't win in the playoffs without a running game. Green Bay's got one. Indy has one. Dallas has one. New England? Hmmmm.
5. Pittsburgh Steelers (9-4)
How can you run the ball thirty-two times for 181 yards and still lose by three TDs?
6. San Diego Chargers (8-5)
This is a kiss of death. Nearly every week I've done my rankings, my #6 team ends up losing that weekend. Sorry, Chargers fans.

I Love Glam!

Allyson at Bring Back Glam! has been counting down her top ten favorite glam bands of all time. As someone who loves the genre, I've enjoyed reading her list thus far, even though my own list would be quite different.

I Love Christmas Music, Too!

Neil at Citizen Of The Month has posted songs from some of his readers for his 2007 Blogger Christmahanukwanzaakah Online Holiday Concert. There are some talented people there. Give it a listen.

Bit O' The Blogroll

Ok. Thanks to you guys, I've beefed up my blogroll (140 links) and I added a little JavaScript thingie in my middle column (the grey one) that will randomly display ten links from my blogroll on every page of this site.

Stuff Only I Care About LX

Welcome

Welcome to the Wednesday edition of Stuff Only I Care About. Since I'm planning on posting every weekday and taking weekends off, I needed to move Stuff Only I Care About. And Wednesday just felt good.

Weekly Random Thoughts On The Carolina Panthers

The Panthers actually won their game last weekend! The Panthers beat the 49ers, 31-14. This was their first victory at home since November 19, 2006. Sad.

The Panthers are now 5-7, three games behind Tampa Bay in the NFC South. Despite their abysmal record, the Panthers are still in playoff contention. They are currently one game behind Detroit, Minnesota, and Arizona for the second wild-card spot in the NFC.

But who the hell am I kidding? The Panthers have no shot at the playoffs. Their final four games are against the Jaguars, Seahawks, Cowboys, and Bucs. This week, they get the Jags. I predict a 31-10 victory for the Jaguars.

Weekly Random Thoughts On The Carolina Tar Heels

The Heels are 8-0 and are ranked first in both the AP and ESPN/USA Today polls. They're off for exams until a December 16th game with Rutgers.

Weekly Random Thoughts On The New York Yankees

While I would love to see the Yankees add Johan Santana to their pitching staff, I really, really, REALLY don't want them to give up Melky Cabrera in the process. I have no problem with the Yankees dealing Hughes or Kennedy, but not both.

But I really don't want to think about what will happen if Santana ends up a Red Sox.

The Cynical Dad NFL Rankings

1. New England Patriots (12-0)
But they don't look invincible anymore.
2. Dallas Cowboys (11-1)
The Cowboys made a major statement with their win over Green Bay.
3. Indianapolis Colts (10-2)
The Colts all but wrapped up the AFC South with last weekend's victory over Jacksonville.
4. Pittsburgh Steelers (9-3)
They could actually beat New England this weekend.
5. Green Bay Packers (10-2)
Favre looked like Bad Brett before he got hurt in the Dallas game.
6. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (8-4)
They've won four in a row and didn't lose a step last weekend when Garcia couldn't play.
